10 Questions with Samson Sounds

Glasgow-based collective Samson Sounds bring their new Boom Sound release to Attic Bar

Samson Sounds Chatterbox

The latest signing to Gardna and friends’ Boom Sound label is Glasgow-based collective Samson Sounds with their track featuring MC Tom Spirals, Chatterbox. Patois mixed with Glasgow patter, we guarantee this infectious tune will get your feet stomping.

Evolving out of the homemade dubwise Samson Soundsystem, Samson Sounds combine guitar strings, brass, vocals and digital production to create uplifting reggae sounds rooted in sound system culture. On hearing Chatterbox performed live at Scotland’s Eden Festival, Gardna signed it on the spot. Released via Boom Sound on 22 March, the final package includes remixes from dubstep to DnB.

Boom Sound is bringing Samson Sounds and Tom Spirals to Attic Bar this month for a single launch party, alongside Chief Rockas Collective, ASBO Disco with soul singer Yemi Bolatiwa, and the Boom Sound residents. Samson Sounds producer Anders answers a few questions ahead of their Attic Bar debut.

Those questions

1. What have you learned today?
About the life of Salif Keita, the albino Malian musician. He sometimes known as ‘the Golden Voice of Africa’ and has led a career of 50 years.

2. Which song by another artist most inspires you?
A difficult one for sure, depends on mood and what the day needs done. One that always makes me smile is Ndima Ndapedza by Oliver Mtukudzi.

3. Who are your top three acts right now?
Bassekou Kouyate, Thornato and Parliament-Funkadelic.

Tom Spirals’ vocals and the phat brass have yet to fail to lift the vibe

4. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again?
Chatterbox! No doubt. Tom Spirals’ vocals and the phat brass have yet to fail to lift the vibe.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead?
There are so many things that could be done… I studied zoology at university, so I guess I might have found myself in that vein of work.

6. What was the last book you read?
The Dispossesed by Ursula le Guin.

7. Most recent binge watch?
Would be quite a while ago, but it was Westworld – not much internet opportunities living in the woods.

8. Do you have a party trick?
I would say setting up the party usually does the trick.

setting up the party usually does the trick

9. Tell us something people don’t generally know about you…
I study massage and bodywork. I believe it’s really important to stay connected with our whole selves. It helps with staying limber for dancing too!

10. What are you doing tomorrow?
Tomorrow is the first day back teaching in Glasgow for the soundsystem project for both me and Tom Spirals. We work with young people between 12 and 18 to build a 12-volt sound system, learn to make beats, DJ, MC and run the system. It’s a great project to be part of. We are running three different ones across Scotland between now and summer.
