10 questions with Split Prophets’ Res One

Res One unveils his latest project, A Dogs Dream – a collaborative album with hip hop producer Illinformed

Interview with Res One

Res One is one of Bristol’s hardest working hip hop MCs. Part of the Split Prophets Collective, they have been pushing the underground UK hip hop scene since the release of their Scribbled Thoughts EP in 2011. They’ve supported the likes of Wu Tang, KRS One, MF Doom and are one of the biggest and most respected hip hop crews on the circuit.

As a solo artist, Res One has tallied countless collaborations and several solo releases, including his Delph Efficacy album in 2015. The prolific MC is now pushing his latest project, a collaborative album with hip hop producer Illinformed, A Dogs Dream.

A Dogs Dream dropped yesterday on Res One’s brand new imprint Green Brick Records – another collaborative project, this time with Split Prophets’ Bad Habitz. They’ll be celebrating with a massive launch party at The Fleece, with a slew of old friends including Split Prophets, Babylon Dead, Creatures Of Habit, Jay0117 and many more.

Res One will be warming up this month with a special guest appearance at Hip Hop Coffee Shop’s open mic sessions at Boston Tea Party on Stokes Croft.

Those questions

1. What have you learned today?
I learned that Cornish pasties have a crusty edge so that miners with poisonous dirt on their hands could eat the pasty and throw the crusty edge away. Kinda like Stokes Croft.

2. Favourite track of all time?
I’ve got too many to say, but the one that came to my head as I wrote this was What Estate are you From? by Reveal. That’s the UK favourite that came to mind, but actually all time favourite is Chan Chan by Buena Vista Social Club.

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again?
If people are tripping out or on that vibe, I’ll put on Venus in Furs by Velvet Underground – that song is the one. Maybe if people are just sobering up, I’ll put on some Jay Rock or some selection. It’s all down to the surroundings.

4. Who are your top three acts right now?
Brothers of the Stone, Conway and Westside Gunn/GXFR, and obviously Split Prophets and everyone who is a part of Green Brick Records.  It’s hard to say because there are so many sick crews out there right now. Cheese and Bread are doing bits too.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead?
Skateboarding or something graffiti related.

6. What was the last book you read?
Collins English Dictionary.

7. Favourite thing on TV?
People Just Do Nothing is one of the best recent shows out. This Country is amazing as well. Any Gordon Ramsey shit.

8. Are you afraid of anything?
Friends and family passing away.

9. Tell us something people don’t know about you…
I like to sit down in the shower…Sometimes. Also I’m a UK size 12 – send me some shoes!

10. What are you doing tomorrow?
Hopefully still being alive, doing what I love.
