Forming in Toronto in 1999, The Birthday Massacre retain a huge worldwide fan base. So much so that Under Your Spell, their 7th studio release, was funded through a 100% successful pledge campaign and earned a spot on the Billboard Top 200.

With a hybrid of 80s electronica and aggressive guitars fused with dark, cinematic melodic progressions, it blends the expansive breadth of The Birthday Massacre’s signature sound. Founding member Rainbow answers our 10 questions ahead of their live show this Halloween…

Those questions

1.)   What have you learned today?
I need to go outside during the day more often.

2.)   Favorite track of all time?
I know this is a dodge, but I really don’t have a favorite song. It all depends on my mood.

3.)   It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again?
Years ago, I used to have a habit of throwing on the song With A Heavy Heart by Does It Offend You, Yeah? whenever I was at a particular friend’s place late at night.

4.)   Who are your top three acts right now?
If you’re talking about acts I’ve come across in more recent years, maybe HEALTH, Youth Code and S U R V I V E. That’s just three that I was listening to earlier on a playlist. That being said, there are so many other artists that deserve just as much attention – I feel bad only picking three.

5.)   If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead?
Probably something art or design oriented. It would have to be something creative and physical.

6.)   What was the last book you read?
I just re-read The Damnation Game by Clive Barker.

7.)   Favorite thing on TV?
Lately… Stranger Things.

8.)   Are you afraid of anything?
Treading water alone in the middle of the ocean.

9.)   Tell us something people don’t know about you…
I have metal staples in my left lung, so I can never get an MRI scan.

10.)   What are you doing tomorrow?
Rehearsing with the band for the upcoming tour.
